Topic/Skill: Different rooms in the house

Feedback provided to tutee: My tutee had let me know the day before our tutoring session that he had just had a lot of tests and he was pretty worn out. I understand this feeling, so I wanted to have a light session. It was also my very last one, so I wanted it to be enjoyable for everyone. I made a worksheet with different rooms that can be found in a house. It also had a list of items that could be found in a house, and he had to match them with the correct room. This session was very similar to the one I had with my child tutee. This tutee is definitely not a child, but he didn’t learn this stuff when he was younger, so I thought it would be a relatively easy and relaxed session. He also still learned new things. This worksheet didn’t have pictures, so I looked up the pictures on Google of the items that he didn’t know so he could see them.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned/realized how much I enjoy tutoring. Some sessions were definitely more enjoyable than others, but overall I really liked the experience.

Topic/Skill: Idioms

Feedback provided to tutee: This tutoring session was very similar to the other session I held with a different tutee. I figured idioms are used a lot in our culture, so I felt it was important to at least introduce them to the tutees that I thought could understand them. I created different idiom cards for this session, since I let my other tutee keep the other set of cards that I made. He didn’t catch on as quickly as my other tutee, so we did the matching with the cards face up twice. He got them pretty quickly the second time, so I knew he was ready for them to be face down. He really enjoyed this game, and I had fun with it also. I explained in further detail the meanings of the ones that he didn’t fully understand. I let him keep the cards for future practice.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that my tutee likes learning new things in the form of games. I’m like this too, and I’m glad he was able to learn these idioms in an enjoyable way.

Topic/Skill: Surveying

Feedback provided to tutee: My tutee had a surveying assignment due in one of his classes, and he wanted to survey me. It was about colors that I wear and why. He asked me some questions and I tried to give him some specific and detailed answers. I then practice surveyed him, and asked him a bunch of questions. We then got into a discussion about how many different surveys there are and when they are used. I gave him some examples of different situations in which I’ve been surveyed, and some of the different questions that I’ve been asked. I then had him create some different survey questions that he could ask me. I gave him the theme of restaurants, and had him create 3 different questions he could ask me. He came up with some good questions that were relative to the topic.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned what my tutee likes to do for fun, what his favorite color is, and his favorite genre of movies.

Topic/Skill: Addition and subtraction

Feedback provided to tutee: Since this was the last session I had with my child tutee, I wanted it to be fun and include different things. We started with practicing addition and subtraction. I wrote down some simple practice problems for him, and he completed them pretty easily. He used his fingers to count for them, so I wrote down a few more problems and had him try and complete them without using his fingers. For the remainder of the session, we went on starfall.com and he played some academic games. He seemed to really enjoy this website, and even mentioned how he goes on it sometimes at home. As I was expecting, he didn’t want to do any of the reading activities. I got him to do one, but I read some of it for him. Overall, it was a pretty basic session, but he got to practice a skill that he’ll always need.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that it’s good to incorporate different activities in tutoring sessions, especially for young children. This session went very well because he was able to do a bunch of different things and it kept him more interested.

Topic/Skill: Reading log

Feedback provided to tutee: My tutee brought a reading log he needed to complete for one of his classes. He explained how sometimes he has trouble with them, so he wanted me to help. We went through it and he read the story out loud. I helped him with different words that he didn’t know, and he wrote down the definitions in his notebook for future reference. I guided him a little on the questions he needed to answer, pointing out key words to look for when he goes back in the text, and explaining any part of it that he didn’t quite understand. He also wrote down the words he didn’t know on the worksheet, and we found synonyms and different forms of the words.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I had already had this idea, but I really learned how dedicated and motivated this student is. He was eager to learn what different things meant and he wrote a lot of notes in his notebook so he could study them. I was very proud.

Topic/Skill: IELTS Reading

Feedback provided to tutee: My tutee wanted to practice more reading for his upcoming IELTS. We did more practice reading samples and answered more questions. This time, however, I wanted him to try and figure out the answers without any guidance. I figured since he won’t have any help when he actually takes the exam, he should practice doing the practice test by himself. He would write down what he thought the answer was and after we got the results, we would go back and find out why he got some of the answers wrong. For the questions he did get wrong, I went back in the text with him and showed him why the correct answer was correct. I told him he should do as many of these practice assessments at home to really improve his skills.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that sometimes a tutor should give more responsibility to the tutee and let them try something, even if they get it wrong. The more they practice, the better they’ll become.
