We had pleasantries, I quizzed him on the vocab from last week. He remembered everything except one word and had even studied! He's amazing!
Knowing that he needed acedemic vocabulary, we discussed some prefixes that would come in handy when listening to acedemic lectures. Uni, mono, semi, bi, di, tri, quad, pent, couple, pair, trio, quartet, etc. He has an account for Quizlet so we found a great set of flashcards on that site for him to continue learning these at home.
I had found two magazines that I thought would be interesting to read aloud and to test his listening skills. I first read an article about the new hominid fossils that were recently discovered in South Africa. This article was much too difficult, and I find myself struggling with discerning the level of material I should read for Muhammad. His speaking frequency and accent are truly amazing and he's incredibly smart, so I tend to over shoot.
The second article I wrote was a detailed recipe on how to make Shwarma. He enjoyed this so much because he loves Shwarma despite not being vegetarian. American recipes can be difficult due to measuring with cups and tablespoons rather than grams. He learned a bit
He will be taking the TOEFL this weekend so we will not meet again this Friday. He wants to wait till the following Monday.
