Tutee:
Andy
Date/Time:
Saturday, February 13th, 2:10-3:10pm
Location:
FSU – Strozier Library
Topic/Skill: Reading,
Listening, and Sight Words
Feedback provided to tutee: For this session I prepared flashcards with sight
words from the book he read last session. The cards consisted of eight words
with two cards of each word, and we played a matching game with the goal of
matching more pairs than the other person. The focus was on word recognition
rather than sounding them out. After three matches, where he would read aloud
each word (and I corrected pronunciation as necessary), Andy was able to read
recognize the words easily. After this I had him read a new book, helping him
sound out words and/or correctly pronouncing them as usual. For the final
(short) activity, I read from one of his favorite books and asked him a few
questions about it along the way.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you
learned: I already knew this,
but it was confirmed that children much prefer games to actually reading (or
even listening). Andy is no exception, so it was nice seeing him be excited to
read words, even if they weren’t in a full book. I really would like to incorporate
more games into tutoring, particularly with children.
