CO #5: Listening
Date & Time: February 2, 2016, 2:00-2:50
Topic/Skill: Listening – Dictation, CLOZE
Teacher Presentation & Student
Participation: The
first part of the class was fairly administrative – returning graded work,
reviewing errors, announcing another quiz to help boost grades, etc. The first activity was dictation (3 sentences,
one at a time). The teacher walked
around the room as students were writing.
They checked the sentences for accuracy.
(The teacher wrote on the board.)
The second activity was a CLOZE exercise using vocabulary they have
studied. First, the teacher asked
students to guess what vocabulary word fit the sentence best. They listened to the whole text once, then
again to fill in the missing words. The
teacher repeated the text a third time, asking students to check their
spelling, emphasizing these were words they had seen before. She led a conversation about their guessing
and what clues they used to guess the right word. She had students correct their work using a
pen in a different color. One
“beautiful mistake” corrected was the use of the apostrophe to indicate
possession. They spent the last few
minutes going over reduced forms.
Materials: Instructor used the board and the CD player
Feedback Provided: Instructor gave feedback as needed during the class.
Lessons on Teaching: I can see the repetition that
happens through different ways of using the same material. Even with lots of repetition, some students
find it difficult to remember material they have already worked with.
