CO #6: Listening
Date & Time: February 3, 2016, 2:00-2:50
Topic/Skill: Listening – Sequencing Ideas; transcribing,
CLOZE
Teacher Presentation & Student
Participation: The
teacher gave students time to complete a worksheet in their books in which they
had to sequence ideas presented in a text they had read and worked with. In giving instructions, she used her own copy
and many gesture to show them what they were to do. She asked a student (one of the more
advanced) to restate the directions, which he did accurately. She walked around helping students, reminding
them to write in complete sentences and checking spelling. They then did a transcribing and CLOZE
activity using the vocabulary they have been learning. The teacher focused on helping students find
context clues.
Materials: Instructor used the board and the CD player
Feedback Provided: Instructor gave feedback as needed during the class.
Lessons on Teaching: Teacher each have a style. The teacher of the class I observed yesterday
seems somewhat formal and serious and structured the time and students’ work
carefully. This teacher was more
informal, open with praise and support, giving additional time where needed to
ensure understanding. Both approaches
work in different ways. I’m probably
more like the latter, though managing time is important to me. This is the class I will be teaching in two
weeks. I talked to the instructor about some of my initial ideas, and she
encouraged me to develop that lesson.
She offered to give me feedback along the way. Observing these three listening classes has
been very helpful to me in seeing how teachers work with listening material at
this level.
