TS #13 – Anne
Date/Time: Wednesday, February 3,
2016, 6:00-7:00
Location: Lyon Country Library
Topic/Skills: Making a doctor’s
appointment; reading comprehension check
Teacher Presentation: I started with the chapter in the program
workbook on seeing the doctor. The
material was very easy for the student, and she breezed through the exercises
without error and with understanding. I had
more material that I had found on the web, and we went through a drill of names
of body parts and of symptoms (I have a cough; I have a runny nose; my tooth
aches; etc.). I checked for
understanding, and when I could not define a word well enough for her to
understand (e.g., “rash”), we found pictures on the Internet. We worked on a dialog for making an
appointment, and student participated without notes. At the end of the session, I checked for
comprehension of her reading. She had
made a list of vocabulary words, and we defined these. For the next session, we’ll work on having a
conversation with the doctor and on understanding information about taking
medication and reading medicine bottles.
Feedback provided to tutee: I helped her with definitions,
showing her pictures when necessary. I
corrected her pronunciation when it obscured meaning. She has a good understanding of the material
she is reading, and was able to give multi-sentence answers to my questions.
Lessons learned: Using what I think is a “below-level”
workbook that is the text for the LVLC program worked fairly well as a way to
introduce the topic. It was important
that I had supplementary material to address the topic in a more appropriate
and complex way. Be over-prepared helps
as long as I’m not driven to complete everything I have on the plan!
