Feedback provided to tutee: In-hwa was very concerned about a reading test that she had coming up so she asked me if we could work through the article that she was having trouble with during today's session. So I had her read each paragraph on her own before asking her to tell me the main idea of each one. I wrote down what she said for each paragraph as a model of how she should take notes on readings in the future. For the longer, more difficult sections, I would ask her not only comprehension questions but also questions that required more complex answers in which In-hwa would have to infer from the reading to answer.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This may be a silly realization but during this session, I realized how important it is to be able to visualize a description in your head in order to understand a reading passage. Since the passage was about creating magnets and included how a group of scientists had created a special "split magnet," I had to research some of the terms and a few diagrams so that I could understand the passage. Once I did, I drew a few diagrams myself so that I could better help In-hwa visualize what the passage was explaining. I really think that helped her better comprehend what the reading was saying.
