Feedback provided to tutee: I had Mary read a chapter of her Cosmetology book for today's session. I also had asked her to write down any words or sentences that she didn't understand so that she could bring them in and we could discuss them. Mary brought in a short list of words that she hadn't been able to understand even in context. I would have her read the sentence in which the word was found and see if she could give a guess as to the meaning of the word. If not, I would use the word in several different sentences. If she still could not understand, then I would explain what the word meant. Afterwards, I would prompt her to create some sentences using the new word to be sure that she knew how to reproduce the term in new sentences.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that even advanced readers may not be able to guess at the meaning of the word even if they are given what a native speaker would consider to be an easy context. This seems to be especially true for low frequency words. I also learned that it is important to be sure that the tutee or student can reproduce the learned vocabulary on their own to be sure that they actually learned it. Several times Mary would claim that she understood a word but could not properly use it in her own sentence.
