Topic/Skill: Reading Skills
Feedback provided to tutee: In today's tutoring session, Astin had brought a book that he really likes to read with me. He was doing really well and was able to recognize several difficult words that he must have heard before but when he came to a word that he immediately didn't recognize, he would shut down. At first, he would sound the words out but as time went on, he just became bored and annoyed. By then, I would have to sound out the word with him but even if he could place it, if we reread the same sentence, he wouldn't be able to remember the word again.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that I need more experience with younger children if I ever find myself in an elementary setting. It has been so long since I learned how to read that I don't even remember how I learned how to read! I was still really proud of Astin because we got through more in this session than any other session though.
