CO #4: Listening
Date & Time: February 1, 2016, 2:00-2:50
Topic/Skill: Listening – Opposites and Rhyming Words (Foundations)
Teacher Presentation: The teacher opened the class with
a few comments about respecting others’ cultural traditions in the context of
taking hats off in the classroom. She
then moved to the topic, opposites and rhyming words. The class had started this topic last week, so this session was repetition and review. She handed
out a copy of the words to the “Opposites” song that accompanies their
textbook. There were blanks, and
students listen to the song and filled in the missing words. She played the song three times. She listed pairs of words (one written, one
blank) on the board and students filled in the blanks orally. This served as speaking practice and allowed
students to correct their own work. The
teacher drew on the list to illustrate what rhyming words are. The teacher talked to students about the fact that some of
them look at others’ work for the “right” answers. She did not frame copying as “cheating,”
rather as “useless” in terms of learning. The class ended with a brief round of Simon Says using the
vocabulary of body parts.
Materials: Instructor used the board and the CD player.
Student Participation: Students participated by doing the worksheet and sharing
their answers.
Feedback Provided: Instructor gave feedback as needed during the class.
Lessons on Teaching: Foundations students need LOTS of
repetition and reinforcement. Even
though some students had the correct answer one time, they sometimes did not
the second time they were asked. I
observed this session (and will two more) because I don’t know how listening is
taught, and that’s my topic of practice teaching!
