Topic Discussed: We discussed socialization in regard to the idea that there is a right way to do something based on your societies expectations. We focused on the expectations imposed on teachers and students, and the relationship between the two. We then compared cultureal expectations in pair activity.
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: I learned that in Vietnam, students have to stand up when the teacher walks in the classroom, and they have to stay standing until the teacher tells them to sit. This contrasts greatly with American classrooms since if you are standing when class begins, the teacher questions your actions. I also learned that in the Vietnamese culture, teachers and students do not become too friendly with each other, since they want to maintain a boundary between teacher and student. This also contrasted with the American culture since I have formed some close relationships with several of my teachers. I have learned to be more conscious of what will be expected of me when I hopefully teach in South Korea, so I do not impose my cultural norms on the students. I will learn their norms by asking the other teachers at the school and by researching.
