Topic/Skill: Listening Comprehension
Feedback provided to tutee:I played some listening comprehension exercises, however I picked one that was too difficult for him to understand. The words were not difficult, but rather the frequent use of idioms. We spent about thirty minutes on it and dissected it by playing only 15 seconds at a time and then reviewing the idioms. I think he felt discouraged at first, but as we started listening in smaller segments and the more I explained, the more he understood. I plan to play the same exercise the next time we have a session to see if he remembers any of the idioms I taught him last time.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that if you do something that is too difficult for your tutee then they will become discouraged and overwhelmed. I will definitely try to be more aware of level appropriate material. I thought this specific exercise was good because of the easy words however it was not the words, but rather how they were used that made it difficult.
