Topic Skills: Giving directions and reading maps; SPEAK preparation
Tutee feedback: My tutee wanted me to help her prepare for her SPEAK (Speaking Proficiency English Assessment Kit) test. Today we focused specifically on reading maps and giving directions (make a left on..., go up/down *st name* street, etc). We read the map provided on the practice sheet a few times together. She took notes on all of the common directional commands that I gave her. She also learned not to use articles in front of street names, such as "the West Tennessee street" or "the Monroe street". I had her look over the provided map several times and then asked her to give me directions from one location (like the bank, the candy store, the museum...) to another. Each location would change each time. Her skills improved throughout the session. I gave her some other practice maps to study until we meet next time.
