TS #16 – Anne
Date/Time: Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016,
6:00-7:00
Location: Lyon County Library
Topic/Skills: Seeing the doctor,
calling 911 (speaking, vocabulary building); reading aloud (reading, pronunciation)
Teacher Presentation: We role-played the dialog of calling
the doctor to make appointment as review of what we had done last week. The student was able to do this easily; she’s
been practicing! We continued the topic
with vocabulary building and familiarization with the procedures re interviews
with nurse and doctor. We also worked on
the vocabulary and procedure re calling 911.
This is particularly important for this student as she is the caretaker
for her grandchildren during the day. This
was a LOT of vocabulary. We finished the
session with some pleasure reading. I
checked for comprehension, and the student understands what she is
reading. She insists on looking up every
word, however, and isn’t satisfied with just understanding in context. We talked about the value of learning
high-frequency words and leaving low-frequency words for later.
Feedback provided to tutee: The students has been
practicing with vocabulary and dialog patterns.
I provided corrective feedback on grammar usage and pronunciation.
Lessons learned: I should have pared down the
materials I’d chosen to work with. I did
it on the fly when I realized the amount of vocabulary was too much, but I felt
disorganized. I’d rather be better
prepared than I was. The student is writing
down and looking up every new word. I
want to support her enthusiasm and at the same time to cultivate her ambiguity
tolerance.
