Taylor TS #5

Tutee: Inhyeong
Date/Time: Friday, January 29th, 12:40-1:40pm
Location: CIES (Lounge)
Topic/Skill: Speaking – Fluency, SVO/Sentence Structure
Feedback provided to tutee: Because Inhyeong wants to improve her speaking, I wanted to begin to focus on her fluency. Rather than fixing every little mistake, I encouraged Inhyeong to simply speak on topics she knows and is interested in. She was still shy and caught up in figuring out the grammar/syntax before speaking, but she did eventually speak about going to the museum with her class. Inhyeong also came up with a sentence that she wanted me to check, and this brought up discussion of sentence structure as well as the general order of subject-verb-object. I did not want to fix the sentence for her, so I formed my own example sentences to illustrate what made hers confusing. Using this and my explanation of the syntax, Inhyeong was able to change her original sentence into a clearer statement.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Inhyeong knows that she is shy about speaking because she doesn’t want to mess up, so I know trying to correct every little mistake would just be counterproductive. Focusing on the sentences that are confusingly worded makes more sense, and she is more than willing to figure out how to fix her sentences.
