A large part Dojun and I's third session was taken up by our discussion about an crazy mishap that occurred at his job. When we first started talking, we told each other about our weekends. He told me that he had had plans to see a movie; however, he canceled his plan because one of his company's planes had to make an emergency landing on a remote island off of the coast of Japan. He said that many of his co-workers were jealous of the workers who were sent to retrieve the aircraft. I told him that I concurred and that I myself was a bit envious too.
After discussing his company's crazy adventures, Dojun was curious to know what I thought about subtitles and whether he should use them or not. I told him that I personally I do not think subtitles are necessarily wrong and that it really depends on why you are turning them on. For instance, I told him that I often turn on subtitles in the original language of the film if I can not understand dialects or accents. For me, this provides enough help that I can practice listening to the new accents, and still watch the film and follow along. I also told him that I often do not put on subtitles if I am listening to interviews or movies that I have seen more than. After, we talked a bit about hangul and the difficulties I am encountering with the writing system.
