FAB LAB Feb 16th 6:30-8:00 roughly
Today, Janire and I went into the Ceramics Lab where all the chemicals and minerals are stored. I had a wonderful time explaining to her some of the things I am learning in my chemistry of glaze and ceramics class. Making a clay body and glazes according to the temperatures at which they are fired is quite scientific. I showed her around the lab and taught her specific vocabulary having to do with the art of ceramics. Together we weighed each mineral carefully with a gram scale following the recipe for fireware clay developed by Robbie Lobell in Seattle Washington. Robbie has a very lucrative business selling flameware- that is pottery which can be used directly on the stove-top and resist thermal shock. The process of making a clay body is tedious and messy, but Janire truly loved the process I think.
