Topic/Skill: Grammar 1A
Teacher Presentation: Teacher began class by talking about the weather and breakfast/morning routines, and then quickly reviewed the grammar from the previous class (simple present). The students mostly worked in the lab, where they listened to recordings they made the day before, paying attention to mistakes. Without correcting the mistakes, they transcribed what they heard, and then corrected whatever mistakes that they heard/saw. Teacher then taught students how to create an email and how to attach their work.
Classroom Management: Teacher tried to make the lesson lively, crucial to a 9am grammar class.
Materials: Computer, recording software, Word, email.
Student Participation: not very enthusiastic but they still worked hard and actively tried to correct their recordings.
Feedback Provided: Lesson(s) on
teaching you learned: The teacher gave me some ideas about how to vary the exercise to be more exciting or to account for a different skill level. I realized that this competency level, similar to my own language learning experiences, can be incredible dull. Despite this, it is important to try to engage the students as much as possible, all the while remembering that it is more important that the students learn than it is that they have fun. It was also noteworthy how the teacher introduced the students to real life skills, such as email and Word, without overwhelming them.
