CO #2: Reading (2A)
Date & Time: January 8, 2016, 11:00-11:50
Topic/Skill: Reading
Teacher Presentation: Instructor encouraged participation by asking students to
think about what they did on the weekend, telling them she was going to ask
them to talk about it which she did. She then
introduced the topic: chocolate. She asked students to write three things they
already knew about chocolate and to tell these to their neighbor. Students then answered a set of questions on
a worksheet (pre-reading). Instructor handed
out an article and read it to the students, asking them to follow with their
eyes. Students completed a brief T/F
exercise on the worksheet, and instructor guided them back to the answers in
the exercise. The post-reading activity was
a small group discussion on the topic of chocolate.
The instructor walked around to prompt discussion and keep students on
task.
Materials: Instructor used projected material, the board, and a
handout.
Student Participation: Students participated in discussion, in pairs, and in
small groups.
Feedback Provided: Instructor gave feedback as needed during the class.
Lessons on Teaching: The students seemed to enjoy the
topic and participated actively on topic.
A few students were more forthcoming with comments and responses, to the
exclusion of quieter students. Lesson
learned: Have ways on hand to balance
participation.
