Topic/Skills:  Review of present tenses (workbook exercises); civil rights movement; intro to reading To Kill a Mockingbird.

Teacher Presentation:  Homework for today was to complete a workbook exercise using present tenses.  Student did most of the items correctly.  We discussed use of contractions in yes-no responses.  The pronunciation focus was on <ing>.  As a native Russian speaker, she is inclined to say <ink>, but she quickly began to correct herself.  We want to do some reading together, so I suggested To Kill a Mockingbird.  As a mini-culture lesson, I talked about the story’s setting before the Civil Rights Act.  We started reading together. 

Feedback provided to tutee:  I pointed out errors workbook activities, and she corrected them herself.  We also worked on correct pronunciation, with the student modeling me.  Her reading skill is good, but perhaps her comprehension is not up to her ability to read the words aloud.  We started a vocabulary log.

Lessons learned:  Student wants to keep working on grammar book.  Much of it is review for her, but she has never worked through these exercises with anyone (she studied independently), so she has questions.  She is excited about reading a book.  We started, and I think perhaps Mockingbird is above her grade level.  But she said she wanted to try at home and said she would read at least one chapter.  She is a very determined learner.  I don’t want her to be frustrated, so I’m in the process of finding another “great American book” that can combine culture and story.
