Topic/Skill: Vocabulary learning in context
Feedback provided to tutee: The tutee had a list of about twenty words from her class, but she had only filled in the definition of about five. We spent our hour together going through every word, and for the words she did understand I had her make a couple sentences using the word. If she did not know or understand the word, I said a sentence using the word in context so she could understand it, instead of just telling her what the word meant. I think this really helped her to understand the word and also form some complex sentences.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned giving a tutee the answer does not really help them, but instead guiding them towards the answer through different skills is more useful. For example, if one of the tutee's vocabulary words was "fly", instead of providing the definition, I would give her the sentence, "I watched a bird fly in the sky". This way she can use the words bird and sky to guide her towards the meaning of fly.
