Topic/Skill: TOEFL Vocabulary and Summarizing Reading Chapters
Feedback provided to tutee: It is very important to distinguish the varying definitions of a word as it changes parts of speech. We discussed her knowledge of TOEFL vocabulary words I provided for her and she did an excellent job at creating/analyzing sentences even though she often does not have the vocabulary to define these words. Concerning reading, she is improving her tactics and skimming and looking for overall concepts. We began working on specific techniques for that near the end of our session.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: My tutee is a very eager and rather quick learner. She needs someone who is patient and she needs concepts to be reworded. It seems that she does not always speak up when I use a phrase that she does not understand. Therefore, I reexplain something multiple ways until I get an auditory response from her that it makes sense. Multiple examples is always the key, and showing incorrect examples also helps to set the boundary of new vocabulary.
