Michael Fernandez-CP#2

Date/ Time: 1.15.16 @ 1400h

Location: Starbucks Tennessee St.

Topic Discussed: spending time with friends/group activities/hookah, his family in Saudi Arabia, Tallahassee, encounters with Americans.

Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: We had an extensive conversation about American sentiments and the idea of a race/ethnicity distinction. My CP expressed that he felt very welcome in America. He told me that he thought everyone here was genuine and we talked about the concept of "Southern hospitality," and how it can be like a facade. He made parallels between an experience with intolerance in America and the class system in Saudi Arabia, and how the disenfranchised classes are mostly found in rural agrarian areas. He was confused about a form he had to fill out where he was asked his ethnicity, and if/how that differed from his race. I was just as confused as he was because in all honesty they seem to be the same thing most of the time, but it was interesting to see how he had never even heard of there being a distinction between the two, whereas in America it is a very prevalent question. .
