Topic/Skill: Speaking skills
Feedback provided to tutee: Today, Mary and I had her practice her speaking skills. She does a great job with getting her ideas across and most people can understand her just fine but she wants to get a job fairly soon and her communication skills are not quite there yet. She wants t go back to school to get an American Cosmetology license and with a profession where you have to speak with people daily, I tried to express to her how important it is for her to make her speech sound more natural. So I would pick a topic such as "What are your thoughts on being vegetarian?" or "Have you ever lived with roommates that couldn't get along?" After I would ask her the question or introduce the new topic, Mary would talk to me about her thoughts on the matter for a bit while I took notes. Then I would show her the sentences she was saying to draw her attention to her mistakes. We then worked together to reinforce the correct grammar of the sentences she was trying to say and I would have here repeat the corrected sentences back to me.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Something that I learned about my tutee today is that once Mary saw her mistakes written on the paper, she instantly could tell that what she had said had been grammatically wrong. I was surprised because I wasn't sure how effective this exercise would be. I think because Mary is so willing to talk, there would be no amount of corrections I could make that would discourage her from sharing with me. I feel like this approach would not work for everyone though, especially those who are more shy.
