Feedback provided to tutee: For this session, I had Mary bring her Cosmetology book so that we could work on reading it together. I had asked her to read the first chapter over the weekend and to come to the session with any questions on grammar and content that she had so that I could help her. After she told me which sections she had the most trouble with, I had Mary read each paragraph out-loud. Any words that seemed to give her difficulty, I wrote down and went over them with her, defining them or giving her sentences and synonyms until she could figure the word out on her own. We did this several times until we managed to hit all of the troublesome spots. Then, Mary and I had a short discussion and I took notes on any grammatical errors she consistently would make. I would write the wrong sentences down so that Mary could see them and together we corrected them.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Today, I learned that adult tutees will reply, "Yes, I understand," even when they don't! Several times I would ask Mary, "Do you know what this word means?" or "Do you understand what I am saying?" Each time she would give me an enthusiastic "Yes!" but when I would question her further or try to check by asking the question in a different way, I would realize that Mary didn't understand at all! I think it was a good reminder that we can't always rely on our students to be honest with how much they know or how much they understand. We definitely need to be prepared with other ways of identifying whether or not our students are learning!
