TS #7 - Paige Dabney

Date/Time: 01/22/16, 12:30-1:30pm

Location:
CIES

Topic/Skill:
Present vs. Past Perfect, Possessive vs. Contractions, Colloquial English through use of Apostrophes, Essay Structure

Feedback provided to tutee:
His needed to practice more situations using past and present perfect. We would take a situation in which the present perfect would be useful and then tried to alter it so that past perfect would be necessary. Also, visualizing these on a timeline may be a good strategy for him to try in the future, although he seems to learn better by talking through scenarios as well. We discussed the differences in apostrophe use- when it signifies the contraction of "is" and when it shows possession. I showed him how to discern this from context clues. Lastly, we discussed his upcoming paper. He seemed to have a good idea of how to use the thesis, but I gave him some additional feedback on what teachers will expect of his essay format in the body paragraphs and conclusion.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:
My tutee really wants to work more on speaking and pronunciation. He is not very detail oriented and is satisfied with understanding the basic concepts. Therefore, it seems best to use speaking exercises to challenge him with more in-depth grammatical concepts. I believe that he is more engaged when I give him an interesting, but possible, challenge.
