Melissa W. TS#5 Ayah

<TS Blogs>
Date/Time: Friday Jan. 22
Location: Starbucks on Tennessee St.
Topic/Skill: essay correction, word recognition, conversation about family/professions/culture, pronunciation, possible TOEFL writing topics
Feedback provided to tutee: suggestions for a short essay she gave me last time we met, answered questions she came to me with concerning confusing words/ways to pronounce things, conversation and comprehension (checking in with her to make sure words are making sense/my speed is ok).
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Ayah is a little more reserved than the other tutees I have. She is bright and enjoys studying english but speaking is slightly less comfortable for her. This is totally understandable, so I am trying to ease her into light conversation between going over things I brought for us to look over. Last session she left with a prompt I gave her from a list of TOEFL writing topics and she emailed it to me to look over. We discussed some grammar errors, and where the meaning of her topic would be less understood. I offered her questions to help her expand the idea there. I had her listen to a couple of songs I thought were good culturally and linguistically. I had a worksheet with certain words taken out and had her listen to the song with headphones will recording the missing words. The speed of the song, and the voice were too much for that day but she did recognize some of the terms. We looked over a list of possible TOEFL vocab and chose some that were unfamiliar for her to go over, we would look up the definition and find synonyms and read sentences together. We made a few notecards for her to go over at home as well. I also had her in the last ten minutes draw me a family tree where she told me a little about her family/their jobs/something she likes about them. I thought this would just be nice to share with each other and that she could practice writing about a common topic in her second language.
