Caitlin TS #4

Date/Time: January 20th, 2016 3:00-4:00pm

Location: Hecht House Computer Lab

Topic/Skill: Note taking and listening skills

Feedback provided to tutee: I had brought in an article to read to In-hwa so that she could practice taking notes and finding the main points of the text without seeing and reading it for herself. I read the article a total of three times and asked her questions to see how much she understood and what words she picked out that she didn't recognize. Then, I had In-hwa self evaluate how much she had understood each time she had heard the article read out-loud to her. Afterwards, I made up a story on the spot for her to listen and take notes on. I then asked her to relate the story back to me using only her notes as a guide. I also asked her to pick out the main point of the story or the reason why I told the story to her.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: In-hwa did well with the FSView article but she did significantly better with taking notes for the personal story I related to her later on in the session. Something else that surprised me was that In-hwa was quite concerned about how she wrote her notes. She felt that her notes were too simple. I never really have had to wonder why we use shorthand or what the purpose of taking notes are but I had to in order to explain why jotting down a few words can actually be more helpful then attempting to write down entire sentences while someone is speaking about important information.
