Topic/Skill: Review of Writing, Vocabulary, Present Continuous v. Present Simple in near Future
Feedback provided to tutee: Her writing sample had greatly improved since the last time I reviewed it. She mostly needs to monitor her use of definite articles and be cautious of incomplete or run-on sentences. The content is extremely nice overall though. Concerning vocabulary, my tutee wanted to catch up on a few words that she had missed in class. I suggested to her to associate a few other words she already knew with the ones she was studying and learn them together in order to best understand them. For example, she was learning the words temporarily and duration and could not understand the difference. We discussed the words duration, temporarily, temporary, permanent, and permanently in order to better understand the relationship.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: My tutee is extremely good at pinpointing anomalies in grammar. I think it works best when I gather plenty examples of what confuses her, I take the time to look up many more after the lesson, I send them to her before the next lesson for her to review, and we discuss it when we meet again. Additionally, she is very talented at visualizing words and grammatical concepts. Painting a picture for her with my words makes a marked improvement in her comprehension and ability to use the new words/concepts herself.
