Olivia Oberg CO#2

Date/Time: 1/13/16 @ 1:00-1:50PM

Topic/Skill: Speaking Group 2A

Teacher Presentation: The class started with the teacher showing 6 sentences on the projector that had mistakes in them. Each person in the class had a partner and they worked together on correcting the mistakes. After going over what they’ll be doing for the rest of the week, they go over the sentences together and he asked people to correct them out loud. If no one knew, he would tell them how to fix the sentences and why. They had to work on outlines and he was going around and making sure they were doing it correctly and helping anyone who needed it.

Classroom Management: The students were working very hard during the entire class. The teacher went around the room the whole time they were working with their partner, not only to help but also to make sure everyone was staying on task. Since the class saw him walking around and knew he was going to check on their work, they stayed busy and did what they were supposed to do. They also participated a lot and worked through the questions the teacher was asking them.

Materials: Projector, white boards, paper.

Student Participation: There was an in-class activity where the students had a partner that sat across from them at the table. The people on one side of the table had 30 seconds to read a question, and then they asked their partner. Their partner then had 60 seconds to answer the question. Everyone was talking during these times and talking until the time ran out. The teacher walked around during this activity too to make sure everyone was doing it correctly and to correct any mistakes they were making. The students were also volunteering to answer any questions the teacher asked them.

Feedback Provided: The teacher was very good at providing feedback. Like stated above, he was walking around as they were doing their work to help them if they needed it. He was also very encouraging with them and made sure to tell them “good job” when they got a question right. It was clear he was putting in his full effort to make sure they improved in their speaking skills, correcting simple mistakes and also explaining why they should say something in a certain way. He also wrote down mistakes her heard them saying and told them they would go over them next class.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: The main thing I learned about teaching from observing this class was to stay involved in what they’re doing. The teacher wasn’t doing something else or sitting at a desk while they were working in pairs. He was going around to everyone and giving feedback, helping, and listening to everything. He used this as ways to find out how to further help them.
