Caitlin TS #5

Date/Time: January 20th, 2016 5:00-6:00pm

Location: Lery Collins Leon County Library

Topic/Skill: Homework and reading skills

Feedback provided to tutee: Astin and I worked mostly on his homework during today's session. I had him read the instructions for each activity before we tackled the activity itself. Often, he would not recognize a word and so would try to sound it out until it sounded familiar. Sometimes he would ask me how to pronounce certain groupings of letters. I made sure to praise him often when he was doing well and I made sure to tell him that I recognized his hard work. He would light up with that and dedicate himself even more to his task even when he was starting to become frustrated.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Astin really made me proud today! When he got stuck on an unfamiliar word, he would try to sound it out on his own before asking me any questions, just like I had told him to do last week. He even asked me to pull out a piece of paper to split the words up by syllables, something that I had done offhandedly to try to help him understand how to break up difficult words during our last session. I couldn't believe that he had remembered a technique that I had improvised out of sheer desperation! It was also an encouragement to me though because then I knew that whether Astin's English skills improve while he works with me or not, I am having an impact on this little boy's life and how he learns- hopefully in a good way!
