Location: Goldstein Library
Topic/Skill: Reading Comprehension/Summary and Vocabulary (particularly metaphorical phrases)
Feedback provided to tutee: If trying to summarize a reading, it is not necessary to know the meaning of each individual word. It is also not beneficial to try to learn every word at once. A better method would be to first learn the most essential words and take some time (days, not minutes or hours) to practice them before moving on. Only then can they be transferred to long-term memory. Therefore, I tried to really help my tutee understand the metaphorical writing style of the writer and help her visualize the story.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that it can be very difficult to help a student find more efficient methods if their strategy is to attack and assignment and ask as many questions as possible. It is very refreshing to see a tutee so eager to learn, but it can be difficult to help them progress when vocabulary acquisition is not their strong suit.
