Emily - CP #4

CP: Inhwa
Date/Time: January 23rd, 7:30-10:00pm
Location: My Apartment
Topic discussed: Birthdays, Korea, Korean food, CIES, mutual friends, tortillas, time differences.

Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned:

Today, Inhwa, Hyunji, and other friends came to my apartment to celebrate a double birthday dinner party. Not only was it my birthday, but it was also Hyunji’s birthday! Inhwa and Hyunji tried Spanish tortilla, aka tortilla de patatas, for the first time. This particular tortilla was made of egg, potatoes, and onions. I mentioned that Spaniards typically eat this tortilla as a tapa, and that tortillas in Spain look and taste different from Latin American tortillas, which are typically made of flour or corn, and are flat and circular. Another friend of mine (who is Latina) came as well, albeit a little bit late. Due to this, she and I discussed what being “on time” means for Latin Americans and Hispanics…we tend to be a little bit late to events, as opposed to our Korean friends who are always either early or on time. This seemed to be new information for my conversation partner
