Date/Time: 1/14/16; 1 pm
Location: CIES Lounge
Topic discussed: Our identities/personality traits; Cultural norms in our home countries
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: I went to the cultural exchange hosted by CIES and learned a great deal about the home countries of the people I talked to. First, I talked in a group with a student from Venezuela, a student from Saudi Arabia, and a student from Vietnam. We went around in a circle and shared words that we thought described us. After this activity, the TEFL students paired up with a CIES student. My first partner was Felix, who is from Venezuela. We both shared how we typically greet people in our home countries. In Venezuela, the greetings usually depend on age, gender, and familiarity of the two people. Felix also told me about the political problems that Venezuela is having right now. My next partner was from Kuwait. He told me about the welcoming custom of serving rice and meat. We also talked about American food and he told me his favorite American food was Chick-fil-a.
