Topic/Skill: Listening, Past Perfect Continuous v. Past Perfect, Compare and Contrast Essay Format
Feedback provided to tutee:
In order to improve listening comprehension to better answer questions, it's essential that you take advantage of knowing the topic ahead of time. Brainstorm what types of information may be given and evaluate the words in the word bank to make sure you fully understand each one.
We discussed the different uses of the above two grammatical tenses, namely by comparing the different emphases (time and action) and the formal/informal dynamics in different situations. This concept was rather confusing to my tutee as way present simple v. present continuous when discussing the near future.
My tutee has a lot of difficulty with completing an essay in a short amount of time. We came up with better strategies for comparing and contrasting, further discuss the venn diagram planning method, and I gave her feedback as she practiced formulating mini-paragraphs for each section of her topic.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:
She is very attentive to minute differences in verb tenses. Examples and pictures seem to be most helpful. Also, even if she knows a topic, she does not feel very confident in it until we have done it several times in different manners. This helps her feel more assured that she is comfortable with it.
