CO #3 - Paige Dabney

Date/Time: 01/19/16, 2-2:50pm

Topic/Skill:
Listening

Teacher Presentation:
The teacher was very active and made full use of the classroom. Despite being a long room, he would move back and forth and switch off sitting in the back of the class where the TA's desk was. He used the projector occasionally, had students read aloud, and utilized the white board.

Classroom Management:
The teacher used a high amount of humor but was extremely authoritative. He had a distinct amount of sarcasm as he spoke in order to help the students loosen up (lowering their affective filters), while also reminding them of the tasks at hand.

Materials:
Students used their binders and the instructor passed out one of their two books partway through the lesson. Additionally, audio files were played during the last 20 minutes, using the computer and projector.

Student Participation:
Students engaged quite well. They asked questions as needed and the teacher was sure to make sure that all were attentive. No student was left out of the activity and some even took the lead in assisting the teacher.

Feedback Provided:
The teacher used a bell that he would ring if there were any grammar mistakes. He was also quite clear in his corrections to previous homework answers. He wrote incorrect sentences on the board, corrected them with students, and reminded them of the concept of a beautiful mistake.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned:
I have learned that humor (including self-deprecating jokes) is extremely important to helping students engage and that having a loud, inviting, and clear voice makes for a very productive classroom environment.
