Tutee: Mary Koshy
Date/Time: January 11th, 2016 from 6:00-8:00pm
Location: Leroy Collins Leon County Public Library
Topic/Skill: Speaking/ Wedding Traditions
Feedback provided to tutee: Mary is an enthusiastic speaker but does not pay much attention to her grammar accuracy. In today's session, when Mary would make a mistake more than once, I would restate the sentence in which she made the error using the proper grammar. Most of the time she would then take the change and try to apply it to her other sentences. The most difficult thing for her seems to be verb tenses. Often, Mary uses the dictionary form and just adds -ed or -s depending on when the action happened. We also came up with a plan for the new year and created some goals for our future sessions. Mary wants to go to Cosmetology school, so I asked her to bring in her hair cutting book material to work on her reading and test taking skills.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that India still requires a dowry before a wedding. I also learned quite a bit about the proceedings of a Christian wedding in India because Mary's niece just got engaged. Mary talked for awhile about her marriage and the qualities of a good husband-someone who is no more than 10 years your senior, has a good job, and doesn't live with their parents!
