Class observation #3 - Janire

Date/Time: 1/12/16, 2.00 – 2.50 pm Listening
Topic/Skill:
Teacher Presentation: The teacher ask students to remember what they were discussing the previous day. It is always to provide a summary of the last class to have a starting point.
Classroom Management: Once the summary is covered, they listen to a famous song of Cristina Aguilera. After that, the teacher makes them to reflect on the song, if they like or dislike the lyrics. Also, they list the unknown words in a handout she provides. Thus, students can keep track of the new words and write sentence with the new word.  This is a good way to study vocabulary, instead of taking bilingual lists. Then, they focus on a listening activity in the book.
After that, the teacher also provides some listening activities in the book. The listening is very basic and students only need to answer simple questions. The topic is about meeting people for the first time. So, this is related to culture and how people introduce each other in America for the first time (what kind of expressions they use, what they say, etc.)

Materials computer, power point, music (a song&lyrics), handout, book
Student Participation: students are always attentive and try to understand what the teacher is saying. Also, they try to participate by raising their hands. It is a relaxed class and there is a positive environment.
Feedback Provided: the teacher is always making sure that students are following the class. So, what she does is to ask questions to them. If they can answer properly they follow, if not they stop until they get the meaning about the activity they are listening in the book.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I really like the way this teacher explains. Everything is very clear and students have the opportunity to interact. The teacher always makes sure that everyone has the opportunity to participate. It also make me to remember that there should not be any favoritism in the classroom and everyone should be equally treated. Likewise, I also like the idea of writing some slides in a power point with the most important ideas. That way, students are actively listening to the teacher and at the same time they know the context. If the main idea is written on the board (or in the slide) the students will not be lost. Also, she provided few pictures to provide background on topic.

I also like the class because students can learn how to introduce themselves in the US. So, the cultural background is also included.
