CP #1
Date/Time: January 14, 2016.
Location: CIES Lounge, Cultural Workshop
Topic discussed: Different forms of greeting, how to say “thank you”, major religions.
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned:
A female Saudi Arabian student informed me on how people greet each other in her country. She wanted to know what time of day is the most appropriate to start saying “good evening” (she was not sure if she should start saying it at 4pm or 5pm), so I told her that 5pm is the general start time. I additionally spoke with a female Vietnamese student, who taught me how to say “thank you” in Vietnamese. She also educated me on Vietnamese hospitality culture as well as the major religions in Vietnam (Christianity and Buddhism). I taught her different American ways of saying “thank you”, what the major religion is in the U.S, and how to greet each other in Latin America, Spain, and the U.S. She seemed eager to hear about Latino/Hispanic culture and greetings.
