Topic/Skill: Introductions and Speaking Practice

Feedback provided to tutee: In-hwa was so friendly and excited to speak with me. Her English was very good but a bit jumbled and it would take her a little bit longer to form her sentences. She really wants to improve her note-taking skills and her speech. As we were talking with each other about family, traditional foods, culture differences etc, whenever I heard In-hwa make a mistake that really affected the meaning of the sentence or when the mistake made it difficult to understand what she was trying to say, I would correct her by restating the same idea using proper English.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Something that has surprised me since I started tutoring was that all of my adult tutees wanted to communicate with me. All of them would take a few moments to gather their thoughts not because they felt like they had to, but because they really wanted to tell me their thoughts. I'm sure that this is affected by the student's motivation levels but it was definitely not something I expected. I also learned that bread is not a common food eaten in Korea unlike here in America- where most dishes consist of a bread and meat combination!
