Feedback provided to tutee: This was my first meeting with my child tutee. Astin was a very lively little boy but had absolutely no desire to work at all. He wanted to read a book from the 1st floor, which I found encouraging but his mother wanted us to work on his homework. We worked on reading the instructions on the pages together. I felt like I was there more to encourage him and teach him how to accomplish tasks such as sounding out words to find their meaning instead of actually teaching him. I think this tutee will give me a well rounded and interesting tutoring experience! At times, it was a bit difficult to give him feedback because Astin had figured out that if he asked his previous tutors, "How do you pronounce this word?", they would just give him the answer instead of working with him so that he would find the answer on his own.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This tutoring session taught me that I need more experience teaching children! At one point, Astin got so frustrated that he started to cry and my first response was utter panic. However, I took a breath and had the two of us change tactics. Instead of reading the words on the homework page, I wrote them on a separate sheet of paper dividing them by syllables. This made it a bit less overwhelming and he was able to tackle the words much better. I also learned that as a teacher, you have to really think on the fly! I hope that in the future I will learn how to be more flexible and recognize when to change learning strategies before the tears start!
