Class observation #1 - Janire

Date/Time: 1/11/2016, 9.00 – 9.50 am
Topic/Skill: Grammar- learning about noun clauses
Teacher Presentation: since it was the first day of classes, the teacher spends around 10 minutes to go over the syllabus. Then, they focus on noun clauses. They read the main information in the book to introduce the grammar content. Students pay attention to the examples containing noun clauses.
Classroom Management: The students take the book and read one paragraph each. The teacher explains the most important parts of grammar and students take notes, if necessary. It is a relax environment where people are learning and practicing new grammar.
Materials: Syllabus, textbook, and activities in the book.
Student Participation: Students read aloud a paragraph when the teacher requires doing it. Also, when the teacher asks students to work in pairs, they work in the activity in the target language, which is something very positive. In this class there are 3 students from Saudi Arabia and also 3 Chinese people. So, even though they are from the same country, they try to speak in the target language.

Feedback Provided: When students do not a word, the teacher tries to provide examples and also tries to tell them the definition so they can figure out the meaning of the word (like “unexpected”). Also, when correcting the activity, the teacher provides positive feedback (saying: good job) and after that, they correct their “beautiful mistakes” together. The teacher tries not to tell the correct answer directly, but students need to tell what is wrong and what the correct way is.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: The teacher told me the structure of her class. She told me that she always focuses on the grammar rules in the first part of the class, and then, students need to work in pairs to create meaning. That way they can focus on how grammar is used and they can practice it.
