Date/Time: 14 January 2016, 11-11:50am
Topic/Skill: Reading, Level 4
Teacher Presentation: The teacher gave a matching quiz on previous vocabulary words and gave the students 10 minutes to complete it. Afterward, he did a review of those words and a short introduction to the passages they were about to read in the novel, The Alchemist. They then read along with an audio recording for 30 minutes.
Classroom Management: The instructor ensured that the students completed the quiz independently but allowed for clarifications as needed. He answered all questions afterward and immediately reviewed the answer with them, but efficiently for time's sake. If a student jokingly complained about a hard question, he returned their comment with humor but always stood his ground. He seemed very aware of all students in the classroom and was very perceptive in catching questions at the back of the room.
Materials: Projector (Audio files, Documents inc. Pictures), Novels, Handouts (Reading Log, Quiz)
Student Participation: There were little opportunities for student participation due to the nature of the course, but the class seemed to have a very open and warm environment. The students interacted with the teacher and each other very well between activities. They asked questions as needed and even assisted one another when appropriate.
Feedback Provided: This was most relevant with the quiz as the instructor efficiently went over the answers and helped students clarify any misunderstandings or additional meanings of the words.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: The instructor's use of humor with losing his authority was most apparent. It was very effective and shows that he has a great relationship with the students without losing his voice over the class.
