Topic/Skill: Speaking- What is a good presentation?
Teacher Presentation: The teacher played a video of a student presenting last year, in the format for how he wants his current students to present next week. They filled out a handout which outlined the presentation. They then partnered up and interviewed each other to then have information for their presentation.
Classroom Management: The teacher managed the class well, in terms of time management and with keeping the students on track. He allotted enough time so the students would either be able to get all of the information they needed from their partner, or most of it so they could finish the rest at home. He also used a "phone box" so all of the students had to put their phones in the box at the beginning of class. I thought this was good management of the class so the students were not distracted by their phones.
Materials: Projector, Microsoft Word, White Board, Video, Handouts, Textbooks
Student Participation: The teacher called out students to answer questions and he encouraged them to answer, even if they were uncomfortable. The students participated a lot, either by asking the teacher questions or with their partners, as the majority of the class was spent talking with their partner.
Feedback Provided: The last ten minutes of the class was spent playing a game focused on gerunds and infinitives. A ball was thrown around to the students and the teacher gave them a verb which they then had to use to make a sentence using it either as a gerund or an infinitive. If students made mistakes, the teacher used their beautiful mistakes to correct them and teach the class how to correctly say the sentence.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I learned to acknowledge students mistakes almost instantly, and then instead of giving them the answer, to have either other students help out or to steer them in the right direction.
