Julia CO #1

Date/Time: 1/11/16 1 pm
Topic/Skill: Speaking
Teacher Presentation: The teacher gave a brief overview of the class period before beginning class. He then gave the students time to warm up with their English in small groups, After that the students gave pre-prepared presentations on various topics including internationalization and inter-cultural marriage. The teacher sat at a desk and took notes on things that the students did well on and things that they should fix.
Classroom Management: The teacher spoke very clearly and enunciated his words, yet he spoke at a normal pace. When calling on students to answer questions, the teacher would simply call out a person's name instead of having them raise their hands. The teacher tried not to embarrass any of the students and asked their permission to correct them.
Materials: whiteboard, marker, paper, pencil
Student Participation: The students participated through giving their presentations. The teacher also encouraged students to provide feedback on other students' presentations and to ask them questions.
Feedback Provided:The teacher provided feedback for each presentation in front of the entire class. Usually, he would begin by writing a word on the board that a student mispronounced, corrected it, and had them pronounce it the correct way.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: It is important to use the "sandwich method", especially when teaching EFL/ESL. This means that when giving criticism you first say something positive, then move to the critiques, and then praise them again. This is crucial in order to keep morale high but to still be able to fix errors.
