Date: Wednesday January 13th, 11:00-11:50 am
Topic/Skill: Reading, Group 4
Teacher Presentation: The focus of today’s class was the format of TOEFL questions. A paper that included several sections titled “question type,” “description,” “example,” and “skill tested” was passed out to the students and explained by the teacher. Types of questions that were introduced were factual, negative factual, vocabulary, inference, author’s purpose, author’s methods. author’s attitude, sentence restatement, reference, sentence addition, complete-the-summary-and-complete-the-chart questions. He then proceeded to give examples for each type of question. He passed out 2 materials: a passage about migration (via main computer; it was made up of 3 paragraphs altogether), and a paper with multiple choice questions (in the TOEFL style) about said passage. He gave the students 20 minutes to complete the assignment. The room was silent for the remainder of the class as the students focused. He walked around the classroom in the meantime, monitoring the students’ activity and progress.
Materials: materials used included student computers, the teacher’s (main) computer, a projector, and a white board.
Student Participation: Instructors called on students, and they answered the questions accordingly
Feedback Provided: This lesson was mostly focused on the students’ reading and comprehension abilities. They focused quietly on their reading passage and TOEFL-style questions. When time ran out, they turned in their papers. The teacher will more than likely provide feedback during the next class.
