TS #1 - Adult tutee - Janire

Date/Time: 1/15/2016, 2:30-3:30 PM
Location: Strozier Library (Sturbucks)
Topic/Skill: Speaking + how to introduce himself
Feedback provided to tutee: Since this was the first day we met, I wanted to know my tutee’s level. He is beginner and has problems with fluency, accuracy and picking the correct word. He is from Mexico and works in the Catholic Church. He was telling me about the difficulties he is experiencing, because he arrived one week ago to the US and this is his first time in FL. So, I am giving him suggestions about culture, how to meet people and what kind of places he can visit, etc. because he seemed quite overwhelmed.
Apart from meeting each other, we also covered a lesson plan. He was thinking about how to introduce himself to other people. So, I gave him some ideas / different topics to talk about. I suggested him to keep it simple and make short sentences when speaking as well.
I taught him some vocabulary and try to explain some new words (for instance: the word “to share and to exchange”).

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This first meeting with my adult tutee was really enriching. Actually, I did not expect to meet someone who has just arrived to Tallahassee for the first time. Since he is from Mexico, I know a little bit about his culture, so I can help him to cope with cultural shock. Also, my tutee told me that he has hard time when speaking English and feels embarrassed. So, I told him that our main focus for our classes will be speaking to get some fluency. Also, we can find high frequent words and/or expressions he can use to express himself.
