Location: Leon County Public Library (kid’s section)
Topic/Skill: Reading & answering questions + calculations
Feedback
provided to tutee: Since this was our third meeting, the child gained more confidence
and felt more comfortable. We were reading two books based on idiomatic
expressions related to parts of the body such as (runny nose: the nose was
represented running a marathon in a picture). The book was very visual and she
could look at the pictures to describe what she was looking. I ask questions to
her to know whether she understands the reading. For instance, I had to explain
to her what “cost an arm and a leg” means, because she
was very confused when looking at the pictures. Sometimes, she understands the
literal meaning, because she is only 6.
As for the second half
of the class, we devoted some time for calculations. This week she shows a lot
of improvement in multiplications. So, I guess the teacher was providing more
practice in this. She is learning very quickly, which is something I find
amazing. Kids understand everything so quickly.
Lesson(s)
about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I
learn that kids learn common expressions they hear. Since the parents of this
kid are foreigners, I think they do not use so many idiomatic expressions in
English. Also, it is very rare for a teacher to use idiomatic expressions in
the classroom. That is why the student found a little bit challenging today’s
reading.
