TS #1 with the child - Janire Campo

Date/Time: January 9, 2016 3.00 pm - 4.10 pm
Location: Leon County Public Library

Topic/Skill: I taught to a six year-old child from Corea. We worked on reading, pronunciation and also I helped her with some maths homework related to calculations. She can read in English, but needs more practice. The child's pronunciation is native-like, since she practices English in class. AS for maths, she is very good at counting and addition, but she has problems with multiplication. Also, her parents wanted me to focus on that as well as reading skills.

Feedback provided to tutee: We spent 30 minutes based on maths, and the rest of 30 minutes reading basic stories for children. The reamining 10 minutes, we made a conclusion of the lesson. We borrowed some books from the library. The feedback I provided for maths was to explain multiplication through examples, for instance drawings. After that, the child made the calculations on her own and when it was not correct, I asked her to rethink about it and sometimes she realized about the problem and others did  not.
As for the reading feedback, we read the books and we spoke the story. I also asked her what happened so far, who were the main characters, who was the best character and so on. That way we were also practicing oral skills as well as making sense of the story.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Children acquire reading skills through practice and become native speakers if they are immersed or expose to the language. I also learned how to teach calculations to a child in a very basic way.
