Tutee: Andy
Date/Time: Friday, January 8th, 4:30-5:30pm
Location: Leon County Public Library (Children's Section)
Topic/Skill: Reading aloud and answering questions
Feedback provided to tutee: Andy was guided in reading books aloud. When he encountered a word he didn't know, I encouraged him to name the letters and sound it out himself. If he didn't know the meaning of the word, I explained it so that he understood. Occasionally I would ask simple questions based on the book, relating it to his own preferences or previous knowledge, so that he could have additional practice in speaking separately from reading.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: This was a good first lesson to get an idea for Andy's current level as well as his personality (and attention span). It is definitely important to select books that he finds interesting so that he has motivation to read them beyond simply being told to do so.
